Chapter Four Slave

I woke in a blind terror, cold panic clutching at my heart. I was back in the barons mansion, under the barons gaze, doomed and despairing… No, that wasnt true. I knew that wasnt true. Id escaped from the baron; I was safe and far away.

Nevertheless it was the barons voice I heard: dimly, distantly, unmistakably. Thick with temper, thick with greed, saying, “Have you found him? Have you found him yet?”

Not the barons eyes that blazed into my mind, no. His were brute and black and lustful; these were cold, blue, ascetic. They looked for me on his behalf, though, I was sure of that—and they had found me, yes. They locked on me like a chain on my collar, and I couldnt pull away.

Hands snatched at me, and I fought them off unseen; struggled frantically, and pulled away, and fell…

And landed on Master Marcs bedroom floor, with a hard jolt that woke me to where I was, who I was with, who I had been fighting.

He loomed above me in the dark. “Finn? Are you hurt?”

“N-no, Master, no, but…” I could hardly speak, because I was shaking so hard, with that livid clutch of fear still around my heart.

“Come back to bed. Easy now, Ill help…” His strong arm reached down for me, but I scuttled away on my butt across the floor.

“Finn, whats the matter?”

I shook my head, lifted a hand to my face, and found it sweating cold, forced out as many words as I could manage. “Master, we have to go. Go now. The baron…”

“Sweet thing, the baron is a long, long way away.”

“No. No, hes not. Hes here.”

“Finn.” Master Marc got out of bed, strode across the room, and lifted me swiftly to my feet. “Finn, you were dreaming, thats all. No surprise if you still dream of that monster. Come back to bed.”

I shook my head stubbornly, tried to push him away. “Master, hes here. Hes followed us, hes found us. We have to get away…”

“Finn, stop it. Stop!” He gripped my shoulders and shook me hard; when that didnt calm me, his slap nearly shook all my teeth loose.

Half-stunned, I stopped fighting, but still shook my sullen stupid head at him, still tried to argue. “Master, listen…”

By then he wasnt listening to anything except his temper. In one swift move, he snatched up his switch from where it was lying ready under the pillow, just in case; another moment had me bent double over the bed, his fist in my collar.

I could barely breathe, I couldnt speak or plead or rant at him. What I could do, I could hear the wicked hiss of the switch through the air, just moments before it slashed down across my back.

Four strokes he gave me on my back, and then a pause while I gasped miserably into the blanket, while my skin burned like it was branded all over again; and then four more, just as hard, biting into my butt.

Then I heard the clatter as he tossed the switch aside, felt his arms lift me casually and toss me onto the bed.
